- recessional: Plagues in your Postapocalypse: - Disease is a huge part of any landscape except maybe our own. Disease in a landscape that used to look like our own should be even more shocking. -
- thelana: The Genius Wranglers: A Rant - Personally, I think the appeal of those relationships has very little to do with people yearning for an old fashioned woman supporting superior (genius!) man dynamic or people getting stuck on some Oedipal trope. I think it comes more from the side effects of the trope. The typical Wrangler personality, especially of this chiding mother sorts means that they are being cast with motivations other than just looking for hotness. -

| Shows I've Been Watching |
[Nov. 27th, 2009|09:11 am] |
The Barchester Chronicles: I watched the first six eps. There’s just one ep left now. The Stanhopes are wonderfully witty. Slope is a nasty piece of work! His battles with Mrs Proudie are hilarious.
House: I watched all the eps up to the 6.05 (Brave Heart). I’ve been loving Season 6. There’s more interaction between the characters, something that was lacking in the previous seasons.
Mad Men: I’ve finished Season 3. Wow, what a great finale! ( cut for spoilers )
Merlin: I’m up to date. I’m afraid I disagree with most of my journal friends about the latest ep, “The Lady of the Lake”, because ( cut for spoilers ) |

| Aventures on rail |
[Nov. 26th, 2009|10:57 pm] |
So, since I've moved, I go to work by train, which is good as it gives me time for reading, etc.
Except that tonight, I managed to get onto the wrong train, and arrived at the storage station. *facepalm* Thankfully, the train driver was very helpful, and managed to find a colleague that went back to Lyon and could leave me at the station before the last train. :D

- irana: On BDSM, Part II - Today we're going to look at some other terms - negotiation, limits, contracts - break those down, and hopefully provide those reading with a better understanding of what those terms mean. -
- irana: On BDSM, Part I - Consent is a vital element in all psychological play, and consent can be granted in many ways. -
- the_minx_17: Hi! My name is Minxie...¦ - [...] if a piece of fiction disregards the basic principles of safe, sane, and consensual they really are more trouble than they're worth. -

Help & writing resources
In an untitled post, bridgetmkennit explains the tags system and the four different types of warnings at the Archive Of Our Own, and how to use them.
lore: BloMo18: Tis the season of saving stories....: tips on saving fanfic stories "in a format that can be easily transferred to most reading devices without losing the author's intended passages of emphasis".
There have been a few posts on BDSM, community rules and terminology, intended as resources for writers and to clear up some common misunderstandings. In Hi! My name is Minxie…, the_minx_17 talks about general rules and some stereotypes. irana wrote On BDSM, Part I to explain the abbreviations SCC and RACK, and to talk about consent. On BDSM, Part II covers negotiation (both Scene and Relationship negotiation).

musesfool: lacrimae volvuntur inanes: "I would like to be able to talk about the episode on its own merits, because I thought it was a fantastic episode emotionally and a great way to go into hiatus, but I am SO FUCKING SICK of the way this show treats female characters."
yourlibrarian (in mind_over_meta): SPN 5.10 - A sign of hope: "There's nothing there right now for an audience to cling to, any more than a clear plot direction for Sam and Dean."

| And now, for something completely different |
[Nov. 22nd, 2009|10:31 am] |
1. I feel behind on fandom stuff, not least my f-lists. If you feel neglected, you're not imagining it.
2. Hello, sexism. And yet I'm totally tempted to install o_O
3. I don't need to run a ½-marathon - it's much more fun to read about ilanarama's marathons!
4. Without being able to say something intelligent about it, I'm extremely fascinated by the fact that I share virtual culture with people whose meatspace culture I don't share. Case in point: 100 Greatest Internet Videos In 3 Minutes. The music is obnoxious as hell, and I don't know all the clips. But the ones I do know are part of an internet culture I share with people from all over the world, but who's not a part of my meatspace culture. Know what I mean? Well, I'm fascinated.
5. I'm also endlessly fascinated with people who can do things with their bodies that I could never hope to do. Point: http://www.collegehumor.com/video:1903600
6. Pollz! Poll #4614
Open to: All, results viewable to: AllWhich impressed you most? (You get multiple choice, because I'm nice [and impressed] like that) OT: Camping!fic? |

| IJ economics |
[Nov. 22nd, 2009|09:59 am] |
According to my count of announcements announcements [sic], InsaneJournal has had seven account sales in 2009 (the seventh was just announced).
I find that troubling, but am strangely adverse to mentioning it - because, I guess, I still feel grateful squeaky was so welcoming to us LJ refugees in 2007. At any rate, I get the impression IJ economics are either unstable, or squeaky wants a bigger personal profit out of the site. Which I can't say I blame him for; we all would like to be paid for our work. But I am questionable about the future of IJ. |

[Nov. 20th, 2009|07:14 am] |
Hmm, Round 4 started later this week, probably because elisa_rolle is travelling, and I'm a bit late too. But you can still vote for the cover of Clippings (art by korekan, design by morgan_d), here.
Thank you, friends ♥ |

From the Nov 18 Writer's Block prompt: What (if any) books would you ban from a high school library? Are there certain subjects that you feel are inappropriate for teenagers regardless of literary merit? O_O |

trobadora: All-Human AUs? - Someone explain this trope to me. You have characters who aren't human: aliens, vampires, demons, angels, gods. What they are is an important part of their character, and writing them as ordinary humans takes away something essential to that character, and I just don't get it. Why is this so popular? -
just_katarin: But Katarin, you just posted! - I distinctly remember, when Heroes fandom started talking about the problematic aspects of the show, the racism, the sexism, how uneven storylines and deaths were, all of it, we all maintained it was unintentional....We thought they meant well but now I see that that was a lie. That was... they never intended good things for the People of Color on Heroes or the Women on Heroes. -
hradzka: Donny Osmond RPF. By pros. - Mike Sterling has an interesting post that touches on on for-pay RPF from the 1970s. He points out that teen magazines included fictional stories about celebrities, mysteries and adventures and romances and -- yes, *exactly,* it was totally RPF. -
melannen: Statistics! - But when I was going through all the Dear Writer posts being linked in the yuletide community over at lj, I kept noticing that there were actually quite a *lot* of people who were linking their letters from their DW accounts instead of their LJs, and I was wondering if there really were a lot, or if it was an illusion based around what I wanted, and was expecting, to see. And then it occurred to me that this might actually be a pretty good metric of how fandom actually *is* moving: yuletide participation is probably as close as we can get to a real cross-section of people who are active in the sort of fandom that is on journal sites, and it seems like the site people link in their letters would be the site they consider their primary home, regardless of whether they crosspost and how. -

| Yay, Maurício de Souza! |
[Nov. 17th, 2009|07:26 pm] |
A famous comics series in Brazil, "Tina" ("Tina's Pals") will have its first gay character! It's a series for children and teens, so this is wonderful news. His name is Caio. He's the cute boy with dark hair who's talking to the blond guy in the first frame, and who's in the center in the second frame here:
Maurício de Souza is the Brazilian cartoonist who created the "Turma da Mônica" ("Monica's Gang"), "Tina's Pals" and many other popular comics. You can read more about him here. |
